On 1 st April 2006 the Government introduced new arrangements for NHS Orthodontic
treatment which are designed to provide Orthodontic treatments to those with greatest
health need.
NHS-funded orthodontic treatment is for patients under the age of 18 who meet a certain
criteria. The criteria is called the “ Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need “ and evaluates a
patient’s need for treatment. The criteria look at both dental health requirements and
aesthetic elements.
Please be aware that the NHS treatment may not be available if the health need does not fit
the new criteria.
We currently have a 2 months waiting list for an NHS Orthodontic assessment from the
moment we receive a referral from your dentist.
There are some restrictions to NHS-funded treatments. Only the cost of traditional metal
braces is covered, so other treatment options, such as Invisalign braces or bespoke lingual
Incognito and Insignia braces are not funded and will be provided on a private basis.
